a little v-day embroidery inspiration..

I had full intentions of doing an embroidery DIY Valentine this year, but alas, the whole I-have-a-2-week-old-who-eats-every-waking-moment thing kind of took priority. I have a big stash of teeny tiny embroidery hoops that I wanted to use, but they can wait. I love this idea from Miniature Rhino (above) of using them to make initial valentines. I had wanted to create mine using a cute "fill in the blank" note, using my handwriting.... like "I love you more than _______" and fill in the blank accordingly, depending on the recipient. ;)

I love you more than iced coffee...

Food File - Easy Valentines "Oreos"

I've got a quick and easy cookie recipe for Food File today! Did you get around to making those cute DIY Valentines cards for your friends and loved ones this year? No? Me either... (not yet anyway), but here's a fast way to make something yummy to give to all your Valentines next week. You most likely have all the ingredients in your pantry (if you're like me), and this recipe takes very little time, which is great in a pinch. (like when you remember your son has a preschool Valentines Party the next day, and he is supposed to bring treats for everyone..)

Homemade "Oreos"
Yield: 18 sandwich cookies

1 package Devil's Food cake mix
1/2 cup margarine or vegetable oil
2 eggs

Mix with mixer on low speed until well combined. Allow to sit for 10 minutes (for better rolling). Use your smallest cookie scoop to keep portions equal, and roll the dough into a smooth ball, with your hands. Bake at 350 F for 8 minutes. Allow to cool, and then sandwich together with your favorite frosting (bought or homemade).
To make the pink cookies, I used a White Cake mix and added red & pink gel food color. You could also use Cherry Chip or Strawberry cake mixes for this.

Icing: (I used Betty Crocker Whipped Vanilla and added red gel food color for the chocolate cookies). Here's a delicious homemade version if you have the time:
2 tbsp cream cheese
1 tbsp butter
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 cup powdered white sugar

I used a heart cookie cutter to stencil a heart on the tops of the cookies. Put icing sugar in a small fine mesh sieve and dust. Tip: don't have a fine mesh sieve? Try using one side of a tea-ball infuser!

You can package these cuties up in red cellophane or a little box with ribbon for the perfect Valentines Day treat to give.

Maternity Style Round-Up

When I saw Jen's post showing her maternity series photos (cute!!), I thought it would be fun to do a round up of my Maternity Style photos. I didn't do a Maternity Style post every week, but I still had a great time dressing up and documenting my pregnancy this way. It feels like this pregnancy flew by! Right now, a style post would show me wearing pyjama pants and a nursing tank top... but we don't leave the house often at this point. Oscar is just 10 days old, and I'm getting used to life at home with 3 kids. So far so good! The few days/weeks post partum are definitely fuzzy... I'm in survival mode, and just trying to keep up with the house, and keeping everybody fed and happy. I'm very thankful for my Mom, who comes over when I need a nap to catch up on sleep, and for friends who have made us meals this week. We're very blessed.

Birth Story: Oscar's Arrival

We have another son! It's been 6 days since Oscar made his entrance into the world, and we couldn't love him more. He is the little life that was growing and kicking inside of me, and we were all very excited to meet him!

I re-read Delilah's birth story, and was actually surprised how similar the two experiences were. Her labor was half as long, but otherwise similar. I had originally posted this birth story with more details, but decided not to share the whole experience. What matters is that he arrived safe and sound. The whole labor was uneventful, and went without a hitch.

He was face up during the labor, but turned at the last minute, so he was facing away from Ryan when he was born. He was looking forward to announcing boy/girl, but I got the first peek! I knew he was going to be pumped that it was a boy, so I smiled and whispered to him "It's a boy.." as they laid him on my chest. I was able to hold him for what felt like a long time right after delivery, which was really awesome. Nothing like it. Overall, I was in labor for 11 hours, and it was a good experience. I had 2 great nurses taking care of us and my doctor was great. I was only at the hospital for one night, and we brought Oscar home the next day. Feeling so blessed to have a healthy boy, and have no complications with my birth experience. Simon & Delilah were THRILLED with their new baby brother, and we could hear them screaming with excitement even before we came through the door, bringing him home. Delilah calls him "Babo" and loves "holding" him. She points out that he has 2 hands, and whether or not he's wearing a hat, and loves studying his ears and his eyes. Simon is very proud to have a baby brother, and says how much he loves him often.

Ryan came up with his name. You may have noticed that Oscar and Charlie are both from the Phonetic Alphabet. This summer when Ryan was doing his flight training, the plane that he flew was call sign HOC, which is Hotel-Oscar-Charlie over the radio. He thought it sounded like a great name for a boy, and I agreed! :) (For those curious, we had chosen Clover Evelyn if we had a girl)

We've already had some bumps along the way with establishing nursing, but I think we're making progress. Sleep hours are few and far between, but I know that this stage is very short. Having Ryan home all last week was amazing, and made the transition a lot easier on Simon and Delilah. Next week is going to be a challenge, but we'll take it one day at a time. Our parents have been so great, and help is never far away, to which I am extremely thankful for. Everyone seems pretty smitten with our little Oscar, and I thank God for him all the time. He's my last baby, and I am trying to make sure time doesn't pass by too quickly. He's bigger today than he was yesterday, and so I am soaking in all his tiny features.

Due Date

Well, the due date has come and gone. I should have expected this baby to come late as the other 2 kiddos were also over-due (Simon 14 days over, Delilah 2 days over), but with a very stressful December, and bouts of false labor, even my Dr gave me the impression that this little one would make an earlier appearance. That's ok though, because I have a very relaxed schedule, and I'm feeling wonderful (other than hip/pelvis discomfort, but no big deal at all). My blood pressure is still low, and everything is working fine, the baby is doing great. I am at peace. It's a strange place to be though... awaiting a baby to come at any moment... will my water break? will I have to be induced? will it be today? will I have time to get the epidural? It's easy to let the mind wander and go stir crazy, but really... I'm at peace. I'm more prepared than ever, and I can't wait to soak up every minute of the birth experience. I am looking forward to Ryan announcing "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!", and that first breastfeeding experience... there is nothing like it.

Simon gives my tummy kisses throughout each day and says that the baby will "come tomorrow, probably". I think he's hoping for a brother, and I can tell he's looking forward to holding him/her. He's got a select bunch of his soft toys put aside for the new baby that he wants to pass down, it's cute.

Well I am going to try and get a good rest tonight.. no signs of labor at the moment. Tomorrow can be for spending time with the kids, taking it easy, and maybe baking some cinnamon buns. The bags for the hospital are packed, and I'm ready, so baby please don't take too much longer... mama wants to meet you.

Thinking about Spring again.... and I am feeling hints of neon making it into my wardrobe. I know the neon trend has been around for a while, but I wasn't feeling it until now. I'm a neutral loving girl, so I think adding small neon accessories would be fun! Hair pins, a bright mani, or eye-catching wallet would be fun to add some *bright* to any outfit. I am in love with those wooden bangles, and can you see those green heels?! Love it.

Adding a neon accessory can be a great way to remind yourself to look on the bright side of things each day. We can all use a dose of positivity throughout the day, right?

Waiting

Tomorrow is baby's due date, and I'm trying my best to wait patiently... I'm so anxious to meet this little one, and finally know who it is!! This whole 'leaving the gender a surprise' thing has been hard! We've finally picked names, so we're ready.

I find that this time around, the anticipation for a third child is altogether different than the first two. When I awaited Simon's arrival, I was naive, and had seriously no clue what was about to happen to my life. I mean, you know that the baby is coming, and that you are about to become a Mom, but the details are yet to be discovered. It's so much excitement before the reality hits. Now that I've experienced life with 2 toddlers, I know what sleep deprivation is all about, and the amount of energy it takes to keep up with multiple children, and everything that goes along with that. Not to say I'm less excited about this baby, but just more aware of what the days and weeks and months ahead are going to bring. It's hard work. I think that attitude is the hardest part of it all, actually. I'm not worried about the paint color of the nursery matching the crib bedding, or if the house is in perfect shape before baby gets here.. I'm more concerned about making sure I'm in the right mindset, ready to operate on an hour of sleep here and there, unshowered, and giving 100% of myself to my newborn and his/her needs while balancing attention for the other two. Sure, planning a nursery is fun, and nesting is fun too, with baking and making meals for the freezer... choosing names is fun, and dreaming up pretty birth announcement cards and newborn photos is fun to think about as well, but it's something altogether different to prepare mentally for the arrival of a baby. I'm praying for a healthy baby that nurses well and sleeps a lot. I'm praying for patience with my toddlers, when they are misbehaving or making messes. I'm praying that I don't set high expectations for myself and for my household. I'm praying that I have the courage to ask for help when I need it, and accept help graciously. I'm praying that I can take life 1 day at a time, and appreciate each day I have with my family, even if I'm exhausted, and recognize the blessing that motherhood is. It can get crazy, y'all! So those are my prayers.

I want to thank my blog readers for following along and sending encouragement and compliments my way during this pregnancy. I appreciate it so much! Can't wait to introduce the 5th member of our not-so-little family to you all!

Food File - Easy Eggplant Parmesan

It is believed that eating Eggplant Parmesan can induce labor... so I thought I would be adventurous in the kitchen and give it a try! I don't expect it to work, but it couldn't hurt to try, plus I love cooking new things. Here's how my made my own version of an easy Eggplant Parm. (even my 20 month old loved it!!)

2 large eggplants (sliced to make 18 slices, 6 stacks of 3)

3 egg whites

1 pkg of your favorite croutons (or bread crumbs/panko)

1tsp dried basil

1 jar of Classico Sweet Basil Marinara sauce (or any other marinara)

2 cups shredded Mozzarella

1/2 cup grated parmesan

5-6 fresh basil leaves, chopped

Cut eggplant in 1/4-1/2 inch slices and lightly sprinkle with salt. Set on a cookie sheet lined with paper towel and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes to absorb extra moisture. While you wait, grind croutons with dried basil in a food processor (I use a Cuisinart Mini-Prep Plus). Prepare 2 bowls... one with the egg whites, one with the crouton crumbs. Discard paper towel, and dip each eggplant slice first in the egg, then in the crumbs. Place on cookie sheet and bake 6 minutes per side in a 350 degree F oven.

In a glass baking pan, pour 1/3 of the marinara on the bottom. Place 6 eggplant slices on the sauce. Sprinkle with mozza & parmesan, then more marinara sauce. Repeat eggplant, cheeses, more sauce.. my recipe made 6 stacks of 3 eggplant slices (2 x 3 in the dish). Top with cheese and fresh chopped basil leaves.

Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil, and continue to bake for 15 more minutes, until cheese is nicely browned.

Serve with salad and your favorite bread.. enjoy!

I *loved* it, and I'm putting this in my recipe box. We'll see if it gets any labor going... ;) I'm so anxious to meet our new little one! Happy monday! I'm off to have some pineapple for dessert. ha!

We're in the middle of winter but I can't help thinking about spring... I'm looking forward to spring so much! The weather, the clothes, the not-being-pregnant-and-fitting-my-swollen-feet-into-my-clogs... ;)

One style that I'm looking forward to sporting is floral/colored jeans & clogs. I styled some examples above. Jeans from Aritzia, Anthropologie. Clogs from Ugglebo. I think clogs are so charming, and a fun pair of skinnies is a great way to show them off!

As girls, we all love to play dress up, am I right? That's one of the reasons I love looking at the looks from the Red Carpet. It's fun to see who wore what. I didn't actually watch the Golden Globes last night, because I had more important things to do (like watch Beauty & Beast 3D at the theatre!), but I definitely browsed the Red Carpet looks first thing this morning. I like to just look at the arrivals photo album, rather than any "fashion police" or "best/worst dressed" albums so I can choose my favorite looks unbiased. Here's my top two looks, featuring two trends that I love right now, and would wear myself...

#1 Claire Danes: Black & White with a bit of classy edginess (the back of this dress is amazing!)

Maternity Style Weekly - 38 weeks

A cute trick with peter pan collars is you can clip a hair bow to it and instantly change the look.

38 weeks, folks! When I saw this dress on ASOS.com I had to have it. The collar is so sweet, and I love the fabric. I'm ashamed to say that today was the first day I actually wore it... here's the deal, it's bright. I'm a neutral loving girl, and don't wear bright colors that often. If you've been pregnant before, you understand that when you're in the third trimester, and 37 lbs heavier than normal, you'd rather wear black.... not bright coral! I told myself to suck it up and just wear it anyways. I think the grey cardi and brown tights sort of mellow it out. It's fun.. I even wore lipstick to match! (MAC Vegas Volt)

On the pregnancy side of things... I had false labor last week, and the occasional bout of contractions each day since then, so I think things are getting ready. The Dr. seems to believe that things may get underway mid next week. We'll see if she's right! I guess we better pick a name...

Simon loves to build forts out of cushions and blankets. He'll put Cars2 in the blu-ray player, grab some plush buddies, and create a cozy fort around him. We've been trying to take it very easy around here, watching movies, reading books, and playing with dolls. I'm feeling exhaustion from being at the end of this pregnancy, and having false labor contractions keeping me up at night. These two kiddos sure know how to make noise and get in trouble, so the moments when we're all playing nicely are definitely precious moments. Simon keeps telling me he can't wait for the new baby to come. Me too, bud.

We got the kids matching monkey dolls for Christmas and they are a hit. I love to watch them play together with them. Delilah has this thing where she loves to rub the dolls hands under her nose and across her eyelids when she's tired. It's a sure sign nap time is near..

My doctor thinks the baby will be here sometime next week, so I'll be resting and getting things ready. Hopefully I can get some meals and treats in the freezer before then, and get the baby clothes out from storage, washed and ready. I might want an excuse to dress up this weekend and do one last Maternity Style post... I won't have this baby belly for long! Stay cozy, friends.

If I had more time, I would knit everyday. I am currently working on a knit project, but it won't be complete any time soon. Winter Skincare.

Winter is here. The air is cold and dry, and it takes quite the toll on your skin! Our Canadian winters here in southern Manitoba can be insanely harsh, but we're having an unusually mild January. It's great! No crazy windchill warnings or -40 temperatures.... yet. Despite a mild winter, skin still needs to be treated differently during these cold months. I thought I would share with you some of my favorite skin care products that I use on a daily basis. (As you can tell, Aveda is my favorite, and no this is not a sponsored post, just things I use) :)

FACE:

1. Aveda's Tourmaline Charged Cleanser, Radiance Fluid, and Hydrating Creme.

These are slightly more moisturizing for my skin than the products that I like to use in the summer months. My face feels perfectly moisturized (without being greasy/oily) and radiant. The Tourmaline Charged line is for normal skin types.

2. Aveda's Tourmaline Charged Radiant Skin Refiner.

I like to use this scrub once a week to buff away any dry surface skin. I really don't like when the skin on my face looks dry and kind of flaky in the winter. This takes care of that without being too abrasive.

LIPS:

3. MOR Lip Macaron.

This cute little balm has beeswax and vitamin E to keep my lips from getting dry. I have the Sorbet scent, and it's so lovely. :) I don't leave the house without this!

HANDS & FEET:

4. Aveda Hand Relief & Foot Relief.

These ultra rich lotions are a cut above the rest. I've never used another hand lotion that has left my skin feeling like silk, and keeping it hydrated all day long. Both of these lotions contain natural enzymes from fruit acids which exfoliate the skin as it hydrates. The more I use it, the better my hands/feet feel! I sound like a commercial... but really, it's the best ever. ;) I gave Hand Relief to every girl on my list this Christmas.

5. OPI Avoplex Cuticle Oil To-Go.

Winter can make for some nasty cuticles. Dry, cracked, hang nails... no good! I keep this little oil pen in my bag and apply it anywhere. I love the way it smells, too. It's a good thing to massage into the cuticles and on nails before bed so the oil can penetrate at night.

BODY:

6. Aveda Replenishing Body Moisturizer.

I use this when I get out of the shower. It's a great all over lotion. It has a really light refreshing scent, that doesn't give anyone a headache... My Mom and Ryan both are sensitive to scents, and have complained in the past at other lotions being too strong smelling, but this one is perfect. I can put it on in the morning, and my skin still feels hydrated at the end of the day. My winter must have.

I guess having worked in the spa industry for the last 5 years has made me really appreciate good skincare products, because I know how hard it can be to finally find products that work for you, and meet your needs. Stella & Dot launched their new Spring '12 Collection yesterday, and I enjoyed watching the launch runway show, via live stream. (Isn't the internet great?!) I thought it would be fun to share with you my favorite pieces from the new collection, and how I would style them.

The Bahari necklace is a gorgeous statement piece. I love the blue colored jade stones. As always, blue mixed with gold gives that nautical feel, so I thought it would be nice to pair with a basic striped tank and shorts. The Bello Bangle is my top favorite piece in the spring collection. The leather adds texture to any outfit, and the studs are the perfect amount of edginess.

10 Goals.

[36 weeks!]

This is the time of year to set new goals, and resolve to make changes or start something new and stick to it, right? Seems to be the thing to do anyways. Here's a few of my goals for the new year.....

1. Keep looking forward.

No regrets, no what if's should have's if only's... Keep optimistic that the path set before me is laid out by the One who loves me and wants the best for me. I need to remember to trust God that he'll be looking out for me and my family this new year.

2. Take more photos of my kids.

They really do grow up so fast. Too fast. Poor Delilah Fawn has so few photos of her first year, and I resolve to start taking more, now. I want to document our new baby's first year with *lots* of photos, of everyday things, small details, and little treasures. Make an effort to go out and take family photos, and get my shutterbug snapping again! I have this great DSLR and it just sits in my closet... gotta change that.

3. Start & Finish a workout program.

So many times I've started one... but I have yet to finish one. Even the 30-Day Shred (you know the one..), I think I made it to day 13 at the most. I have one in mind that I want to start in March (after the Dr. ok's me to start exercise postpartum) and I resolve to complete it. For real.

4. Breastfeed.

I am choosing to nurse the new baby, as long as it works to. At first I settled with the thought that "Meh, if I make it 3 months, that's good enough and then we'll switch to bottles." I get sick of breastfeeding, and don't enjoy the way it feels... at all! It's a natural thing that just doesn't feel like it comes naturally to me. That being said, I'm making it a goal not to give up out of boredom or mild discomfort. I want to do it longer for a few reasons. Bonding with the baby, the baby's health, saving money (formula kills the budget I tell ya), and persevering. I'm not setting a definite timeline for this goal, but I resolve not to quit just because I am sick of it, or don't want to anymore.

5. Make over the blog.

This is going to be the year for Create*Loves. Watch out! I am planning and journalling, making lists and sketches... my goal is to re-define this blog, and make it an even bigger part of my life. I'm SO excited about this goal. I have always done the html and design work myself, but this time I am saving up to hire someone who I feel will take this blog layout beyond what I can do. Happy!

6. Keep doing hair.

It's been a difficult time, as we have recently closed our salon business. It's easy for me to feel negative thoughts about myself in this situation, and there's been a cloud of 'failure' over my head. I need to remember that I AM a great hairstylist, and I love doing it. Just because the business didn't work out, doesn't make me less of a talent (If I had a horn, I guess I was just tooting it). I want to keep inspiring myself by enrolling in classes, and exposing myself to new styles and techniques. Even though I won't be working in a salon environment for the next few years, I want to keep doing hair at home and work on my skills. I'm going to tell that "failure cloud" to get the heck out!

7. Eat more raw foods.

I love cooking and baking. I love being in my kitchen. I love getting new issues of Everyday Food in the mail, and my recipe book collection is growing... but one thing I find is that we don't consume enough raw fruits and vegetables in our household. I want to have a bowl or serving tray of some kind that will always have fresh fruit or vegetables on it, ready for the taking. I want my kids to have a good relationship with raw foods as well. I got an awesome blender from my mom for Christmas, and I want to make smoothies with it. Breakfast smoothies, green smoothies, you name it! A lot of people have goals that involve losing weight, dieting, or eating better, and I'm just simplifying for this year and saying more raw fruits & veggies!

8. Get really good at following our budget.

Ryan has accountant in his blood, and pride's himself in making budgets for all kinds of scenarios in our life. I'm thankful for his financial know-how and grateful that he has taught me the importance of following a proper budget. We had one for last year, but I didn't always make sure I was following it. I always thought, "Ryan will tell me where we're at, and I don't need to worry about it." This year, I want to follow the budget and know exactly where we stand financially at any time so I can make more educated decisions with my spending. This goal also involves me shopping online less, and saving spending allowances for bigger purchases (like furniture etc.).

9. Sew window coverings for the kids' rooms.

This is a small goal. I don't sew often, and I would like to get more comfortable with my machine. I have the vintage fabric already, and now I just need to find a pattern and get them done!

10. Play with my kids everyday.

I need to work on having more patience when it comes to playing with my kids. I want to set aside more of my time to play with them, and do creative activities with them. We read together a lot, (and I mean a lot), but I could definitely spend more time in play-mode with them. This is, after all, Simon's last year at home before he starts Kindergarten in the fall. (eeeep!!)

There you have it.

I know that this year is going to bring challenges, but I say bring it. I resolve to look at every situation with a positive attitude and enjoy life at home with my kids. I'm excited to start new things, improve on others, and live with a happy heart.

A new year is upon us! I'm deciding that my word for 2012 is FORWARD. Moving forward in life and not looking backwards. Not regretting anything that has happened in the last year, and moving forward with new opportunities, new projects, and new goals. If we keep our gaze forward, even if we're in a stormy place in life, we will end up seeing the light at the end of that tunnel. I'm choosing to go forward in 2012.

This is a hard day, personally. I'm thankful for my positive attitude, though, and I know that 2012 is going to be a year for a fresh start. I have lots to be thankful for, and a new life to anticipate in the next few weeks. Doesn't mean I can't think that today just plain sucks. Thank God for tomorrow.

Christmas at Home

We spent Christmas Day at home, with my Mom, sister & brother-in-law. It was a relaxing day. We slept in, opened gifts, had brunch, baked cinnamon buns, opened more gifts, napped, watched Home Alone, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Christmas Eve is a special time, too. We always have dinner at Ryan's parent's house, attend the Candlelit Service at our church, and open gifts with them. One of the kids gifts was as tall as Delilah!

They got a sandbox! Simon can't wait to fill it up.

We got into our fleece pyjamas and read some Christmas story books before bed.

This was the first year that Simon showed real excitement towards Christmas morning, and was so pumped to see what his gifts were. Each year, it gets more and more fun for the kids. :)

About 20 minutes later.... so fun!

Today, as much as I would love to hit the mall for boxing day madness, I'm enjoying another day at home with my family, and I feel so refreshed. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas Day, no matter how you spent it.

Holiday Baking: Chocolate Crinkles

The baking continues... (this may just turn into a mini series for the blog). Chocolate Crinkles are a fancy looking cookie perfect for holiday gift giving, or bringing along to a party. I was first introduced to Chocolate Crinkles by my good friend Lisa. Her mom made them the day before Lisa's wedding day, because they're one of her favorite treats. I remember her saying that normally they enjoy them at Christmastime... so I added them to my holiday "To-Bake" list! I was assigned to bring sweets to my gathering today, and they were a hit.

Chocolate Crinkles:

1 cup premium cocoa
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup veg/canola oil
4 eggs
2 tsp vanilla (madagascar bourbon vanilla is my fave)
2 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp instant coffee (optional... but it gives them a hint of mocha flavor)
Icing sugar for rolling
Dash of cinnamon

In a mixer, combine cocoa, sugar, and oil. Mix to make it dark & glossy. Add eggs one at a time, to slowly combine. Add vanilla, and continue to mix until well combined. In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and instant coffee. Add dry mix to the wet ingredients slowly, until just combined. Cover, and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Using a spoon, or really small scoop, roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Roll the balls in icing sugar & cinnamon mix. Place on parchment lined cookie sheets 2 inches apart.

Bake at 350*F for 9-10 minutes.

These are best enjoyed warm, but also store well in the freezer. Imagine enjoying these fresh out of the oven with a hot cup of Mexican hot chocolate. Yum!

I also brought Red Velvet cupcakes to the gathering, and had fun decorating them with pearl shimmer spray and Holly sprinkles. ;) I used the new PC brand cake mix for these, and they tasted great.

It was a festive day, and I LOVED dressing up my kiddos in their Christmas attire. Delilah wore her Harajuku Mini dress and sparkle tights & shoes. Simon wore his red plaid shirt that he chose for himself, with matching red socks, and his "wedding shoes" as he calls them.

This is my favorite week of the year! I hope you're all enjoying being festive, and soaking in all of the holiday events and family time.

Holiday Baking: Whipped Shortbread

I love baking at Christmastime, and this year I've been baking up a storm! It's such an enjoyable past-time for me. I'm going through a bit of a stressful time in my life right now, and so when I bake, I can switch off the worry, forget about the stress, and just focus on making something yummy & pretty. It's like therapy. It's a productive feeling with a rewarding outcome... which is a nice feeling to have when I feel like I am losing control in other parts of my life. Ok, I hope y'all aren't psychoanalyzing me right now... I'll just get to the recipe. ha!

My Grandma used to make these cookies every year, and I love the way they smell! I'm not a huge shortbread fan to begin with, but I'm nostalgic toward these, and the smell takes me right back to childhood. We have our family gathering tomorrow evening, and I am bringing these along, hoping they can bring back the same happy memories to my relatives. :)

Whipped Shortbread:

1 1/2 cups butter

3/4 cups icing sugar

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour

3/4 cups cornstarch

Glazed(candied) cherries

Granulated sugar for rolling

In a mixer with whisk attachment, cream the butter and sugar until really fluffy (3 minutes or so). In a bowl, stir the flour and cornstarch together, and gradually add this mix to the fluffy butter. (I exchange the whisk for the paddle attachment here) Mix until well blended. Scoop out the dough with a small cookie scoop and press your thumb in the middle. Place a cherry in the middle, and with cupped hands roll into a ball so that the cherry is surrounded by shortbread. Roll in sugar and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Allow to chill in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking so they hold their round shape better.

Bake at 300 *F for 20 minutes.

Cool completely before you enjoy these pretty snow balls... warm shortbread tastes funny in my opinion! I like to freeze them, and eat them right out of the freezer.

I've also made German Orange Cookies (or German Soft Cookies), homemade oreos, and apple pie... I'm on a roll! I wanted to do a post for the German Orange, but Ryan ate them all before I remembered to take a photo... they're his favorite. My sister in law has baked a lot of traditional sweets and shared half with us as well. This bake swap is totally fun! I hope we do it every year. Jackie, I'll bring you some of these tonight. ;)

Sometimes I want time to fast forward. Usually those times occur when I'm pregnant, or stressed, or anticipating something. Then I stop and think how fast time already goes by... like how fast my Mom says I grew up, or how fast Delilah is growing into a little girl, or how I always say "where did [insert month] go?!".

Sometimes I want this month to be over, sometimes to want to savour every bit of it. Sometimes I can't wait for the new baby to be here, and sometimes I have to remind myself to enjoy the time I have left with just 2 kids.

Sometimes I feel like the situation I'm in is never going to end, and sometimes I need to remember to be thankful and that if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us... (Chris Tomlin lyrics)

I'm a bit of a roller coaster ride right now.

As much as I love December, I can't wait for it to be over. But my challenge to myself is to still enjoy it, because it will indeed be gone in a flash.

Simon's Cookie Reception

Simon's preschool program "Clock Tower Corner" held a Cookie Reception today at the art gallery, with an exhibit of the children's art! He got to dress up 'spiffy' because I explained to him that he was part of the featured artists and was important. He got to proudly show us what he made, and loved every minute of it.

The kids made watercolor paintings, and were encouraged to paint their favorite things (they were learning the song "These are a few of my favorite things"). It was ADORABLE to see what the kids painted. A 3 year old in Simon's group painted "Optimus Prime", ha! Others painted lego, butterflies, Christmas presesnts, etc. My heart melted when I saw Simon's painting....

He gave us a tour of the room where the program takes place, upstairs at the art gallery. He showed us where they create art, where it's left to dry, and where they sit to sing songs with Ms. Jen.

It was so much fun. There was hot cider, and a live band playing Christmas music. It was really neat to see the kids' art displayed, and how proud they were to show it to their parents & grandparents. Simon really enjoys going to Clock Tower Corner, and that makes me so happy.

Instagram.. finally up with the times.

I got Ryan an iPhone for Christmas, a little early. He loves it, and I love borrowing it to snap the occasional photo with Instagram! Ha, he may get annoyed with me yet... but I can see now why everyone loves Instagram so much... it's great!

I've been taking it slow the last few days, feeling achey and tired, and trying to avoid catching any flu bugs. I have decided though, that December is my favorite month of the year. Everyone seems to be in a festive mood, and Christmas tunes are always on when you turn on the radio... hot beverages are *that* much more enjoyable, and thinking about the gifts that the kiddos will be opening in a few short weeks makes all the aches go away.. I love December.

trimming the tree.

I wanted to make today special, to officially welcome December into our household. Simon had preschool this morning, and when we got home and finished lunch, put Delilah down for her nap... then we got out the ornaments and the advent calendar. Our tree has been up for almost a whole month already (!!) but it only had lights on it, no ornaments. Simon was very excited to help me trim the tree.

We started with the plastic ones, and Simon was so careful! So I figured he could handle the glass ones no problem. We only had one casualty, which isn't too bad! I assured him it was no big deal. He felt pretty bad, poor guy.

Now I just need to find a cute tree topper!

He was pretty proud of our decorating skills. We rewarded ourselves with hot chocolate of course. It was nice to do this with Simon, he seems really into it this year!

It was a special time, and I don't think it will become a tradition because I'm sure Delilah will want to participate next year.

I'm still planning to fill each pocket with a fun surprise (other than the stitched ornament) for advent. Haven't got around to it yet... but today was obviously decorating day. :) Did you do anything fun to welcome December?

[evenings at home are for baking...]

I've been taking it easy. Our internet was sort of down at my house over the last few days, and blogging was not going to happen. I've been taking life slowly ever since the gala last week. Trying to catch up at home, and rest. We had the first of our Christmas family gatherings this weekend, which officially puts me in the holiday spirit. Ryan's work banquet was on Saturday, which is always a treat. Cedar plank salmon, veggie pizza, mocha punch, red velvet cupcake, and a comedian = one lovely dinner. I laughed so hard, it was like medicine... loved it!

Exciting news of the day, Ryan got his iphone! (his first smartphone, and my Christmas gift to him). I already downloaded Instagram... for me of course, haha, so you can follow me there! I'm createlovesholly..

Holiday Gala/Salon Open House 2011

Last night was our salon's 3rd annual Holiday Gala (open house event)! It was fun to plan, and the turn out was great. This also explains my lack of posts this last week... hosting an event like this takes a lot of preparation, and time!

We launched our holiday gift sets, introduced new handmade hair accessories, had almost everything in the store on sale, and served pretty food! We also give stress relieving massages & hand massage treatments to everyone who attends, which is a nice perk. ;) It makes for an evening of festive music, relaxing shopping, visiting with clients and friends, and all around fanciness. We set up our Stella & Dot for an added shopping experience.

I baked macarons for the evening, and wanted to try displaying them in a tree a la Laduree, but that proved to be difficult! First of all it was hard to find a big styrofoam cone, then I realized quite quickly how fragile macarons are when sticking them on! I only made one little one, but everyone loved them! I was going to break up with macarons after yesterday, but a woman complimented me saying they were the best she'd ever had (!!) so maybe I won't. ;)

The decorations were a team effort, and half DIY, half bought. My mom helped me make a ton tissue paper pom poms, and some of the stylists made felt ball ornaments that we turned into a pretty garland. I had fun putting up the fabric/ribbon garland behind the dessert table.

Overall, it was a great night. It was the perfect excuse to do some of the things I love most... bake, make stuff, decorate, and dress up. That's what the holidays are for, right?

D.I.Y: Chevron Print Wrapping Paper

We had our first snowfall (that stayed on the ground!) last night, and waking up to a white winter wonderland has officially put me in the holiday spirit! I love adding personal touches to gifts, and making things over the holidays. This year, I don't have a lot of free time to make a lot of my gifts by hand (boo), so I thought a DIY wrapping paper was just enough of a personal touch on a store-bought present. :)

I accidentally erased the photos from when I was making this DIY, so please bare with the lack of photos for each step... oops!

Supplies needed:
-Plain kraft wrapping paper. (I picked mine up from the post office)

-scissors

-sponge

-heavy body paint (it shows up brighter than runnier paint)

-paper plate

1. Cut out the chevron shape out of the sponge. This can be whatever size you like depending on the pattern you want to make.

2. Squirt some paint into a paper plate, and dip your sponge. A nice thin layer is good.

3. Stamp your sponge chevron on your paper, starting at the top right, and work left to right re-dipping the sponge as needed.

Here's a random fact for you... whenever someone asks me what my favorite feature is, I always say my shoulders. Not sure why, but I like my shoulders. I like raglan sleeves, racer back tanks, and halter straps on a lot of dresses because I think they flatter my shoulders. One trend that I am loving right now, is cut-out shoulders! I think it's a sweet way to still show your shoulders, even in the colder months. In the first photo, #3 is even a maternity top! I think it's cute.

[hanging out in new jammies, listening to sesame street songs before bed]

Yesterday, I felt this urgency to get out of my house, and spend time with my kids.. away from our livingroom. I needed to pick up some stuff from a beauty supply in the city (90 minutes away), so we made a cute little day trip out of it. I let Simon plan the day with me, as we went.

First, we made a playlist of music that Simon wanted to listen to on the drive. He picked a lot of Christmas songs, with the occasional JLo upbeat addition (ha!). We took care of business first thing, and picked up the supplies. I asked Simon what he wanted to do next, and he said he wanted to go to the mall! So we walked around the mall, I treated him to his own bucket at Kernels, and then we shared Chinese food at the food court. It must have been something else to see all three of us sharing from the same plate! We picked out some Christmas presents for Grandma at a store, and then decided to leave.

I remembered that I wanted to go to a new Carter's store on the way out of the city, and Simon was so excited to visit the new "pyjama store". They picked out some new sleepers. Is there anything cuter than a child in a sleeper?? I think not.

A Starbucks run for a caramel brule latte, and then we hit the road for home. Both kids were asleep within 5 minutes of leaving, and I could enjoy my latte in silence... it was so nice!!

This is probably boring to read, and doesn't sound like an exciting day at all... but it was the best day I've had in a while. Can't really explain it. I felt like my kids and I were a real team, and everyone got along, the whole day. They were in a great mood, and I was happy to drive around with them, shopping and what not. I am trying hard to enjoy these last few weeks with just the two of them, because soon there will be 3!

Once we got home, both kids wanted to try on their new jammies right away, and had a cuddly evening.

I felt positivity, and was thankful for the little things... like how cute kids are in sleepers, and how a little thing like popcorn can make a child's day, and how being a team makes all the difference in everyone's mood.

Maternity Style - 29 weeks

I dressed a bit professional/semi-casual for working at the salon this morning. This blazer is one of my favorite things in my wardrobe, and I took the buttons off of it for now, while I can't do it up. (I'll sew them back on after the baby is born)

To spice up an otherwise plain outfit, I added accessories with fringe.

The third trimester is here, and I want to say "finally"... but in all honesty, this pregnancy has gone by fast for me! I know that January 28th is far away, but this season seems to really fly by, which is *awesome*. I'm by no means comfortable, and it's a challenge to find clothes that don't cut in, or fit too tightly. Even my boots don't fit because my legs are retaining so much water, so my calves are huge. But this is all par for the course. Pregnancy is uncomfortable in general, but I love the kicks and wiggles from this little one, and I'm so excited to do this for them. Pregnancy is a physical sacrifice, but it's the best gift, and I would do it all over in a heartbeat.

I've got a follow-up ultrasound and the good ol' Glucose Tolerance test coming up. Everything is good though, so far.

I've been doing a prenatal exercise dvd, which helps me with keeping as flexible as possible. Stretching and relaxing music are a real treat while Delilah naps... Simon sits on my mat beside me and does the exercises too! It's cute.

Food File - Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies

I'm still into pumpkin, even though the Canadian Thanksgiving is long over, and October has come and gone. I searched the web for a good pumpkin cookie, and came across this one over at My Baking Addiction. They looked great, and I love a good cookie with oatmeal in it, so I gave them a try!

I followed the recipe exactly, except I used Original Craisins instead of dried cherries. They turned out amazing... so soft and chewy, with the perfect amount of sweetness. So yummy with a glass of milk, or a cup of pumpkin chai!

I don't know what it is about fall... but baking is my favorite past time as of late.

I'm having a Stella & Dot Holiday open house today, so I made some macarons for the occasion. Out of the whole batch, the one I took a photo of, above, was the prettiest one. :) The rest aren't as uniform, and have a "nub" on them... but I'm getting better!! This was probably the 6th time I've made them, and they turned out the softest. Practice makes perfect! I recently bought this book: Macarons

..and the recipe is great! The instructions are really easy to follow, and the little book is full of pretty photos. I look forward to serving these tonight, and making them again in the future. I think I'm obsessed!

Hockey player in training...

Simon got a pair of hockey skates (and a helmet, which he wears all. the. time.) for his birthday this past September. Today his Grandpa took him to the rink for his first skate! We all went along to watch. Ryan and uncle Chris took him for his first way around the rink. They didn't think he was enjoying himself...

But after another go, he got some more confidence. I went on the ice to snap a photo and asked him if he was having fun, and he said "Yeah I am!! Now you should get off the ice, you might fall Mom..."

Overall, he had a great time. He did really well, too, for his first time on the ice. He is only 4 after all... did you know that Elvis Stojko learned how to skate when he was 4? Ha, not saying we're hoping our little Simon gets into championship figure skating. Ryan played hockey when he was younger and loved it, so I think he'd like to see if Simon gets interested in it too.

The whole time we were watching the guys skate, Delilah was not impressed. She was walking around looking for a way to get into the rink. Turns out she wanted to skate, too! In time, sweetie..

Simon helped his Grandma make homemade cocoa when we got home from the rink. He thought it would be fun to smell the cocoa powder and ended up exhaling into the bowl.. covering his face and eyes in it! We had a good laugh.

Marshmallows on top? Of course! I hope we can take Simon skating more this winter, because I think he's going to like it, and it's something that he can do with his Dad, Uncle, and Grandpas. What's a winter without skating and hot chocolate?

Do you have a favorite winter tradition? I'm getting pretty excited for winter to arrive around here.... although we're having some above seasonal weather in southern MB and the snow is holding off for now. Not complaining!

Lights, Camera, Fashion!

A few weeks ago, Jenna & I went to Lights, Camera, Fashion! with Jeanne Beker. It was my first live runway show! It was a show to promote local boutiques and Canadian fashion designers. The atmosphere was great, the music was loud and energetic, and I had lot of fun. My favorite part of the show was "Wonderful World of Sheepskin" (a factory boutique in Winnipeg) with Julie Pedersen designs. They had it 'snowing', with holiday theme music... and huskies! The big coats and handmade mukluks were so perfectly Canadian.

It was really neat to see Jeanne, and hear about her life and how she got involved in fashion. It was inspiring.

I've always watched Fashion Television, ANTM or other fashion shows and wanted to witness one live. Now I have! It was fun.

Maternity Style Weekly - 26 weeks

The plain black tee....

You always need a few staples in a maternity wardrobe. It's a limited amount of time that you'll be wearing these items, and you want the items to serve you well, so they're usually pretty versatile. I look for very versatile items when shopping for maternity clothes. One of my favorite items is this basic V-neck tee by Maternal America. It's long, comfy, and oh-so-wearable... everyday.

Yes, it's kind of boring, but it's easy to dress it up, and wear it different ways. One way to dress it up is with a statement bib necklace and pencil skirt. I would wear this to the salon, out for a latte, or to church.

My most favorite bib necklace that I own is the Medina Bib necklace, by Stella & Dot. The medallions add texture and interest with just the right amount of bling.

So, even though a plain black tee might be considered boring... it's still my favorite maternity staple, so it's fun to find ways to dress it up, and change it up. I'm 27 weeks pregnant now (these photos are from last week), but I'll keep the Maternity Style posts coming, don't worry. As I enter the 3rd trimester, it's getting a lot more challenging to dress for fun, and I'm running out of colorful items in my closet! I wear a lot of neutrals. I'm making it a goal to include some more color into my outfits for the upcoming events I attend, especially for the holidays. I've got a few good black dresses, but I need some color! I think one hard thing about being pregnant is the whole "not wanting to be noticed" thing. Face it, when you're growing by the day, and retaining water like a dam... you would rather blend in. Trust me. I remember with my other pregnancies, not wanting to go out to eat, or go to church, because you just feel.... well, big! It's something I'm trying to work on, and trust that this change in shape is indeed beautiful, and for a God given, wonderful purpose... so why try to hide?

October is almost over! It feels like this month just flew by... We've been keeping busy. Simon has completed his first session of preschool, and has a bit of a break before we start the second session. He is really enjoying it, and it breaks up our week nicely, getting us up early and out of the house. Seems like everyone is finally on the mend, and our noses aren't trying to run away on us. Spirits are up again, and moods are much more friendly. :)

I'm planning the salon's annual Holiday Gala, and preparations are in full swing for that. Lots of design work, invitations, posters, decorations, ordering, etc etc. It's November 24th, and that's less than a month away! (eep!)

I've been having fun exploring my new laptop, and getting comfortable with it. It's almost the same as my old one.... just newer, I guess!

Today I got news that my Macbook Pro has a fried motherboard. So I'm without it, or photoshop, or any of my files for the time being. Crazy how much we all rely on our technology, eh? I feel lost without it! I'll have to get into the groove of blogging on Ryan's desktop in our basement until I figure out a solution for my poor Mac.

Not sure why I needed to share this with you all, but oh well. RIP Pink Lady.

We've all been a little sleepy around here. Simon is over his cold now, and he's passed it on to little Lilah. She's only been able to get sleep in our bed, not her own. So we're all feeling a tad sleep deprived around here. I'm feeling rather "pregnant" these days, which also brings its own lull to the everyday. Women who have been pregnant before know what I mean, when you hit that part of your pregnancy, where you really feel it all of a sudden. The change in body shape becomes more dramatically noticeable, and everything just feels different.

My energy goes up and down, and regular blogging will commence right away, I'm sure. It's just been one of those weeks. I did in fact have a 25 week Maternity Style post, but didn't want to post it because, well... it was too boring! haha. I'm feeling the need to add some color to my wardrobe. I've been feeling very grey, if you know what I mean.

Here's hoping for a healthier, more colorful week ahead.

Treat Your Hair

A lot of people don't use treatments on their hair. I thought I would mention a few of my favorite ones here. Every hair type can benefit from an occasional treatment, whether you have dry, normal, damaged, colored, or highlighted hair.

Treatments are meant to be used once a week as part of your haircare routine, or even just on occasion when you feel your hair needs that little extra TLC. Do you feel like your shampoo & conditioner aren't giving your hair everything that it needs? Maybe you feel like your hair is lacking in a certain area, and you want something that'll give it that extra attention. Treat yourself, and your hair, to a conditioning treatment!

1. For Damage: If you have recently lightened your hair, did a color correction, or find that it's damaged from heat stying.. then Aveda's Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment would be for you. It's a super rich, creamy masque that sits on the hair for 5-10 (or more!) minutes after shampooing. It goes deep into the hair and repairs it with quinoa protein and natural oils (such as meadowfoam and jojoba). Your hair will be stronger and healthier, tangle less, and have more shine. I also recommend using a treatment for damage anytime before a color service, especially if you plan on going lighter.

2. For Dry Hair: If your hair is naturally dry, course, or brittle, you would *love* this. Aveda's Dry Remedy Treatment Masque smells awesome! It's aroma comes from organic palmarosa, ylang ylang, rose geranium, and vanilla (mmm, right?). This treatment leaves your hair feeling soft and moisturized thanks to buriti oil and pomegranate. Use once a week after shampooing.

3. For Colored Hair: Aveda's Color Conserve Strengthening Treatment is my favorite! I use it once a week. My hair isn't terribly damaged, or dry, but coloring it on a regular basis is hard on it. I can keep my split ends & breakage under control with this treatment. By using this treatment, your color will last longer because it seals the cuticle making your hair shinier too! Morikue protein helps strengthen the hair, and sunflower & macadamia nut oils add the shine. It also contains natural sunscreens to prevent fading... bonus!

A lot of salons also offer conditioning treatments as add on services, which is definitely worth it. Some of the products used during the in-salon treatments are even stronger and more powerful than the take-home versions, for that extra care.

I love doing good for my hair... I just want to touch it and play with it the day I do a treatment. :)

New Obsession.

I'm a sandwich lover. All kinds of sandwiches. I'm a sucker for gourmet sandwiches, and it's been one those "cravings" that I've had with this pregnancy. Ryan comes home for lunch everyday, and I've been getting sick of making the same ol' grilled cheese in my frying pan... you feel me? I was running out of ideas, and dreaded 12 o'clock more and more. I thought it was time to treat myself to a Panini Press and get excited about making lunch for my family again.

I started researching different presses online, and couldn't believe how many there are! So many options, and a lot of them are really pricey (up to $300 and more). I have a griddle, and so I didn't need the removable grill plates, and 5-in-1 types, and temperature settings, etc.. All I wanted was a small, basic, sandwich press. I decided to check my grocery store, and sure enough, they had exactly what I was looking for... for $34.99.

I used it for the first time today, and love it. I have a feeling I'll be using it all the time. I didn't take a photo, but this is what I made today... (my first panini!)

Rosemary Focaccia bread, artichoke & asiago spread, smoked turkey, roma tomato, baby spinach, herbed havarti cheese, and hot banana peppers. It was like bistro menu stuff. yay!

It's been a great Thanksgiving weekend! Lots of family dinners, and taking it easy. Yesterday we went to Ryan's parents house for dinner, and watched the Winnipeg Jets game, too. :) I wanted to be cozy, so I kept my outfit very simple, and comfortable. Thyme Maternity makes my favorite jeans because of the panel. It's discreet, and super thin & stretchy. This is the type outfit that I wear probably 75 percent of the time, or more.

I made myself a Pumpkin Chai before heading over to the Neufeld's. It's perfect tea & cardigan weather. :)

I finished this simple look with some gold jewelry. I like my Renegade Layering Necklace for dressing up a basic tee. The Mini Cluster earrings add of bit of 'edge' to the outfit with the subtle spikes. Love those.

We're 24 weeks. 24 is my favorite number. I guess you could say this is also my favorite part of pregnancy, too. The baby belly is in it's last days of the "cute" stage, haha. I've been growing pretty fast, and it makes me worry just how big I'm going to get by the time 40 weeks comes around! We had our ultrasound and everything is looking good. The baby is a little bigger than average so the tech told me I won't be having a 6 lb baby... lol! I knew that already because Simon was 8 lbs 12oz, and Delilah was 9lbs 3oz. :P We do have to go back for a follow-up ultrasound in a few weeks to double check on a kidney concern, which I was told not to be alarmed about. Food File - Hearty Chili

Chili is one of my top favorite comfort foods. It's the best thing to make on a cool fall day. I always loved the chili that my mom made growing up, so she taught me how to make it. I've made it my own by changing the ingredients to my liking, but the method is the same as she taught me. It's not as hard as it seems, I found out. It's one of the first things I would make when I moved out on my own, and I still enjoy making it today. This recipe makes a big batch, so invite some family over, or freeze it in portions for easy future meals.

I normally use canned diced tomatoes, but my neighbour brought me some of her fresh garden tomatoes, so this time I used those as well. I love fresh garden tomatoes... they taste so much better than hot house or store bought.

Holly's Hearty Chili

1 pkg extra lean ground beef (about 1.5 lbs)
1 small onion diced
1 small zucchini (sliced, then quartered) *this is optional, I just really like zucchini.
1 28oz can diced tomatoes
*I also added 2 garden tomatoes, chopped.
1 cup Hunt's original tomato sauce (2 small cans)
1 19oz can Unico bean medley (a mix of kidney & romano beans, with chick peas & black-eyed peas)
*I don't like a ton of kidney beans in my chili, so I prefer the 'medley' for a good variety.
2 pkgs Clubhouse Chili seasoning
1 can mushrooms
1 can corn
1 sprinkle of red pepper flakes for some added 'heat'

Brown ground beef in a skillet/frying pan with onion. I like to season it with a bit of seasoned salt and ground pepper.

While the beef is browning in the pan, chop the zucchini and cook in the bottom of your Dutch Oven on medium, with a tsp of olive oil. Cook the zucchini for 5-7 minutes so it's tender.

Add the rest of the ingredients, including the browned ground beef, and bring to a boil, stirring often. Reduce heat to simmer and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes before serving. I sometimes let it simmer on really low heat for an hour.

I like to serve this chili with grated cheese and tortilla chips, or with garlic toast, whatever you're in the mood for. It freezes really well, and seems to only improve the flavor after a day or two of refrigeration.

I. Instruments you play: I used to play the oboe in highschool band (weirdo!). I wish I could play violin.

X. X-Rays you’ve had: hmmm, I think just dental ones. The only bone I've ever broken is my index finger and it wasn't serious.
Y. Yummy food that you make: Ribs! Oh, and crepes. Those are two of Ryan's favorites, and I can guarantee to please him with either.
Z. Zoo animal: I've always loved the pink flamingos. Last time we went, there was baby red pandas, and they were adorable!!

BLOG TOUR: Granny Square Love by Sarah London!

I happily agreed to be a part of the Blog Tour in celebration of Sarah London's new book: Granny Square Love! I've been a fan of Sarah's patterns, and eye for gorgeous colour combinations ever since I discovered her, after learning to crochet in 2007. I love crocheting granny squares, and this book is chock-full of ideas that take you out of the box with how to use them. I was given the pdf to review for the blog tour, but I still want to purchase this book because it would be a beautiful coffee table book to go to for eye candy. It inspires you to literally colour your world with granny squares.

Sarah shares a bit of nostalgia in the intro of the book, with how she remembers seeing her grandmother crochet when she was a child, and admired how she turned a pile of little squares into "blankets of warmth and love." Sarah has gone and made a book with 25 new and more modern projects that use the same concept of the classic granny square, but are much more fun, modern, and inspiring for todays happy hookers. ;)

Granny Square Love is great for beginners! In fact, I think granny squares are the perfect way to learn how to crochet. The book teaches you all the stitches you need to know, in the first chapter. There's great diagrams, and easy to follow instructions.

A lot of the projects are small, and would make great gifts. I love quick crochet projects, and after browsing through this book, and I want to make them all. Christmas is coming, and there's many projects that could easily be completed in time for the holidays.

Speaking of the holidays, one of my favorite projects from the book would be an awesome way to spice up your table for a family dinner (or anytime!). The placemats and co-ordinating napkin holders are practical, and cute. I plan on making a set of these for my table.

The book takes you through your home, with projects designed for each room. One of my favorite features of the book is Sarah's "Color Commentary" on each pattern. She encourages you to try new combinations, use bold colours, and explains why she used the colours she did.

Thanksgiving is this weekend! It's my favorite holiday. I love it because it's more about family, and less about gifts (like Christmas). The fall air, the food, the coffee drinks, the sweater weather... all wonderful things.

I created a look that I would love to wear to my Thanksgiving gatherings. The colours remind me of cinnamon and pumpkin pie. :) I love pattern mixing for fall, so the subtle dot pattern in the dress works nicely with the lace accents. Gold jewelry is the perfect compliment, and what autumn outfit isn't complete without a chic pair of oxfords. I love the scallop detail and colours in this pair!!

I hope your weekend is full of pumpkin pie, cinnamon, cool breeze, and warm hearts.

Outdoor times.

This is my favorite time of year. I wait for the heat of summer to pass so I can truly enjoy the outdoors. Simon asked if we could go for a wagon ride, and look for leaves. I packed them up, and off we went! We were gone for almost 2 hours, just looking at all the different leaves fallen on the ground, and collecting our favorites, along with a few special rocks, sticks, and pine cones. I love the smell of being outdoors in October, and the weather is gorgeous right now. The sun is warm, and the breeze is cool. Perfection.

When I was a kid, my mom would take my sister and I to the same park each fall for a leaf hunt. We collected all the pretty coloured leaves and came home to make art with them. It's a fun memory, and part of why I love this season so much. I look forward to doing the same with my kids every year.

Another autumn tradition we've got going is the corn maze. We plan on doing that next weekend, so I hope this indian summer sticks around a little longer! The snow will be here before you know it... all the more reason to enjoy some outdoor time today.. and tomorrow. :)

Ryan took some cute snapshots while I was putting Simon to bed the other night. Delilah is developing quite the personality, and we're very amused. She's happy and giggling one moment, and throwing a tantrum the next. She's been teething, so that's the reason behind a lot of the latest misery (she's cutting 3 molars right now, poor girl). She loves to play with sunglasses, shoes, and well.. anything that Simon is playing with. She likes dancing, and making people laugh because she knows she can! This stage can be frustrating as we're figuring out this newly developing personality of hers, but I'm loving all the time I get with her. I tell myself everyday that these days will be gone in a flash, so I'm trying to cherish each moment, smiles, tears, screams, all of it.

Domestic Adventures: Cinnamon Rolls

Is there any one thing that you've wanted to make, but put it off for a long time because it intimidated you? For me, that one thing was cinnamon buns. My aunt can make awesome cinnamon buns, one of Ryan's aunt's had him saying hers were the best, everybody had grandmas who made them regularly, and I was afraid to go there. It seemed too hard! I'm not sure if it was because it involved yeast, or if the homemade ones I've had were too good to "compete" with, or what...

One day, I decided to take on the challenge. I looked for a recipe online, and knew I could trust the Food Network site. When I came upon Michael Smith's recipe, with the video, I thought I could actually do it.

Michael Smith really teaches how to make a real homemade nostalgic cinnamon roll, with steps by step instructions. I watch the video each time I make these, even though I already know the steps. :) He teaches about the importance of using quality ingredients (like vietnamese cinnamon), and the importance of letting the sweet dough rise twice.

Michael also shares how he finds delight in the imperfection of these rolls. How uneven they are, compared to the uniformity of bought baked goods, is something we should take pride in. It's a really great recipe, my favorite for cinnamon rolls, and I'm happy that I took on the challenge. I've made them 5 times now, and everyone has really enjoyed them.

Another one of those things I've always been afraid to try making from scratch is pie crust... but if I don't try, I'll never know if I can do it, right? I enjoy these domestic adventures. :)

Food File - Pumpkin Spice Muffins

I love pumpkin, and today was the perfect windy autumn day to make muffins. I looked everywhere for a tasty pumpkin muffin recipe, and decided upon using the one I found here, from Fine Cooking. I changed some things, and added a few things, so this recipe is my adaptation of that recipe. I'm very happy with how they turned out. Moist, with a crunchy top, the perfect added sweetness of the filling, and the best fall flavors all together in one jumbo muffin.

Here's how I made them:

4 eggs

1 cup plain yogurt (or greek yogurt/sour cream)

1 can pure pumpkin puree (3 cups)

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup melted butter (I use salted butter)

1/2 cup applesauce

With the whisk attachment on your mixer, mix until well blended.

Combine the following ingredients in a separate mixing bowl, and whisk by hand to blend them together:

4 1/2 cups flour

1.5 tbsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

3 tbsp cinnamon

2 1/2 tbsp ground ginger

1/4 tsp ground cloves

pinch salt

1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, and stir with flat beater attachment just until mixed. Fold in the chopped walnuts. (Pecans, chocolate chips, or raisins would also be good). Scoop batter into Jumbo tin foil muffins cups and place on a baking sheet. (tip: paper muffin cups will stick! Tried it.. Either use tin foil cups, or spray your muffin pan with a non-stick spray)

I sprinkled a streusel topping on the muffins before baking, made of brown sugar, a dash of cinnamon and a tbsp of butter to make it crumbly. Bake at 350*F for 35 minutes. (30 minutes if your using the medium baking cups or a muffin tin) Yields 18 jumbo muffins. (probably 24 medium muffins)

Maple Cream Cheese Filling:
1/2 cup cream cheese (soft)
2 cups icing sugar
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tbsp cream
-Combine all ingredients and mix well.

Allow to cool completely (20-30 minutes should do), and then fill each muffin with the Maple Cream Cheese filling using the "filling" end on a cupcake decorator. Use as much of the filling as you like, depending on what your sweet tooth tells you to do... ;)

Steep yourself a cup of Earl Grey and indulge in this autumn treat. I bet if you bake with the windows open, the neighbours will be jealous.

I took my Mom to the spa this morning for some pampering, and pretty nails! It got me thinking about what my favorite nail lacquer shades are for this season, and here they are. My favorites right now are olive/military greens, metallics (gold & copper please!), deep plums, and camel beiges.

The Orly shade is a bright olive with a pretty metallic shimmer sure to catch some attention. The China Glaze shade is what I chose for my nails today, and it's *so* pretty in real life. It looks black from a distance, but up close, you can see the plum color with a subtle copper shimmer, it's great! I think camel tones are gorgeous for nails, and imagine the copper glitter top coat over it! The OPI shade is a dark, sophisticated military green... can't go wrong there.

Treating myself to some spa services was just what I needed today, and it was so nice to spend time with my Mom and treat her, too. (She's turning 50 this week, after all!) We enjoyed a fabulous lunch with my sister, some quick shopping (Sephora!), and Salted Caramel Mocha frappuccinos of course. ;)
