Missing piece.

We have lived in our house for exactly 13 months now.  I've spent this time trying to make our house feel like our home. You know? First it takes a while to unpack, then the organizing process begins, and then once you feel comfortable with the "everything in it's place" idea, then you can start thinking about decorating.  That's how it makes sense to me, anyway.

So when we moved, we built a bedroom for Simon in our basement.  It's a great room, I love the shade of light grey that the walls are, and he's got a great space to play around.  I'm still working on the functionality of it, but he has a space that's his own, and that's good.   With the anticipation of our baby girl's arrival soon after we moved into this house, we made the upstairs bedroom into a nursery. Planning this room was so much fun for me.  I love the wall color, the vinyl wall art, the pink chandelier, the personal touches etc.  I wanted a cute room that wasn't over the top girly, but still had whimsical appeal, and a space that she would love as she grows into toddlerhood.  It's not done yet, but it's close.
Ryan has the garage exceptionally organized, and his row of DeWalt tools is a joy to him.  He has his space to work, and to keep his tools handy.  He likes having the attic organized as well, which he accomplished this fall. Ryan also has a space in our basement where our desk is located with his desktop computer, and stuff related to our business.

Everyone is my house has their own space... except for me! I finally realized this after some spring cleaning a little while ago.  Being a creative person, I've been extremely frustrated with myself for the lack of creating I've done, and just not ever completing a project.  I have a TON of projects on the go, but some of them are in a box downstairs, some are under my bed, in a drawer, in the hall closet... everywhere! I've been feeling scattered, and unable to accomplish things in the creative part of my life.  I've finally realized how important it is to have a SPACE that's all my OWN.  To be honest, most of my crafting supplies are still in boxes, unpacked for the last year.  I miss it! I want to make it a goal to create a good studio space just for ME, this summer.  Our basement isn't finished, but I want to make something work.  I feel like if I can have a proper spot for everything, and be able to see what I have (supplies etc) visible at all times, then I can feel my creativity again.  I feel like I've figured out the missing piece.  So the brainstorming starts now, and I look forward to planning a studio/craft space for me in this house.  I think making your house your home takes a long time, and I'm learning to be patient.

Do you have a place that's all your own in your house?

  1. I live in a studio apartment with my husband and a little dog, so no sadly I don't even have a kitchen table to take over. Someday...maybe when I am 40 I will have a craft room all to myself. ;)

  2. I have a wee space in our spare room, my desk is on one side, my husband has a desk in there too. It's good, but it's cold in there in the winter so I still end up crafting on the dining room table!! But at least I have somewhere I can put my wips. I hope you can find a space to call your own soon! x

  3. sorta... I just purged our odd-shaped closet so if you part the 2 rows of clothes, there is a little cave of craft supplies. It's all organized with shelving and whatnot, with a little rolly cart with my current project... our space is so small, it's the best i could do. we'll see if out-of-sight-out-of-mind takes over though.

Good Luck and have fun setting it up! :)

  5. I wish I had a sewing room, but that room is already taken by our little boy. I am thankful for my sewing corner in the bedroom. You can see a picture of my sewing corner here: http://www.piecesofme.nl/2011/04/pieces-of-our-home-sewing-corner.html. I can't wait for pictures of your sewing space!

  9. I had a space my own, but it was too chaotic to even work in, and an overall unpleasant room in the house. When we finally redid that room and made it the most desirable in the house, it was for my daughter! Her nursery is gorgeous and I wouldn't change a thing...but I wish I had a craft room!

  10. I understand how you are feeling! Not sure when I will be able to set up some sort of space but when I do it will be part of the "playroom" At least now I have a kitchen with my stuff in it again! I just started using it today.

  11. I completely understand how you are feeling. I am in desperate need of the perfect crafting space as well. I'm currently in the process of redoing the other half of my room into a craft studio. My room is really long so it should be easy to cut it in half and create a cute little space. I just wish I could snap my fingers and everything would be done, haha. I really want to create new things! :]

I hope you can create your own space soon! Good luck doll! xx

  12. In our last apartment, I had turned our entire guest room over to a crafting room. It was the best. We moved in November, and now all of my supplies are spread from my closet to the coat closet to the basement. I miss my old creative space! Thank heavens I love this apartment more :)

  13. I have a house all to myself, but i understand what you mean. And with the creative mind you have, planning your own room is gonna be a lot of fun!

Also wanted to let you know that i love to read your blog. I came here after visiting the Red Velvet site. I read that your husband planned to go to the Netherlands before you met and that's what trigged me to continue reading. I'm dutch so it apealed to me.

Have a great and love to read more of your own space project!

  14. I have my office but it's not exactly ideal. We rent so it's hard because I can't really make the changes I'd like to. One day, when we own a home, I'd like to have an office/studio detached from our house. Like one of those mod pods or something where clients can come meet with us but also where I can work in peace. :) Ah... someday.

  15. Holly, I know how much you enjoyed your craft room in your previous home and I'm happy to hear that you are planning your new creative space. You are so creative - it's always fun to see what you come up with. Now that I'm passionate about sewing again I've set up "my space" in the basement. It's great to have a place to leave projects out and be able to come back to them, if only for a small block of time. Happy creating!
