[Food File] - Choices.
For personal reasons I am venturing out on a dairy free diet. I've already had a lot of great advice via Twitter and Facebook, and I'm looking forward to putting this new diet into action.
I love sharing recipes here from time to time, so maybe I'll share my adventures in dairy-free eating as well.
Are you dairy-free? If so, what is your milk alternative? I'm going to try Silk, Almond Breeze, and Rice Dream, and see which one will be for me. What is your favorite source for recipes?

Almond fresh almond milk.
ReplyDeleteI love it so very much
Trader Joe's Vanilla Rice Milk. It's delicious and creamy and they make an original flavor for baking.
ReplyDeleteI also recommend Earth Balance original butter spread for toast. YUM.
Good luck with your new diet!
I love silk so much! At first it took a while to get used to having no dairy but it has helped my health so much and now it tastes so amazing.. I would never go back to dairy! Veganaise for mayonaise and Earth Balance (soy butter) YUM. Amazing! Good luck! There are so many great dairy free products nowadays <3
ReplyDeleteAlmond Breeze, vanilla unsweetened. I find Soy does even worse things to my stomach than dairy so Almond is the way to go. It's quite delicious.
ReplyDeleteI am also a Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk lover.. it took some getting used too but it's yummy. I found cheese the hardest thing to part with...
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, and yes to all of the almond milk suggestions! I too find that soy milk sometimes upsets my stomach a whole lot. A yummy chai latte is also absolutely delicious made with almond milk. But as far as ice cream goes (thats healthy, right?) coconut milk based ones are the most amazing and creamy.
ReplyDeleteNow I am hungry.
in our house, my husband is the only person without food allergies (unless you count MSG, and in which case WHEEE! food allergies all around).
ReplyDeletei'm gluten and soy free. our boys are gluten, dairy, soy, egg and legume free. (or, at least those are our heavy hitters.)
the boys drink 365 original rice milk (that's whole food's brand, which is gluten-free) and now that i'm nursing a wee one i'm no longer drinking milk and drastically cutting back on dairy (projectile spit up!)
breakfast for the boys is typically sausage links and a gluten/dairy/etc free muffin or donut. lunch is lunch meat, fresh veggies and fruit and gluten-free pretzels or chips. dinner is whatever i make without the dairy (which is actually really easy).
email if you have any Q or want some help!
I'm going to forth (fifth? or however many) the Almond milk suggestion. The taste of Soy Milk was never one of my favorites (I usually only use it in cooking) and soy tends to upset my stomach a bit.
ReplyDeleteI've been attempting (and have been mostly successful) to go dairy free. good luck! there are so many good blogs out there to check out for recipes.
We love almond milk more than soy or rice, though it really depends what's on sale! :)
ReplyDeleteCookbooks we love Veganomicon & website love--the ONLY website for recipes is the Pioneer Woman's website: http://thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen/
I cannot stress enough how *everything* I've tried is fantastic from this site. We eat vegetarian, I am gluten free, and they have a really good "dietary restrictions" section, too, for lots of diff. things like that.
Fabulous tasting food!
Hope that helps,
Sarah M
OH! btw, coconut milk is a great option if you have to go dairy free in baking items & sometimes kefir is easier on the tummy, too.
ReplyDeleteS
in my vegan dabbling, I've tried all three and I think the Silk was my favorite. almond milk was pretty good too. Not a huge fan of the rice milk. I haven't tried cooking with almond milk but I know the soy milk was PERFECT in the two recipes I tried and the rice milk kind of failed me.
ReplyDeletegood luck on your dairy-free adventure! I can't wait to see recipes.
i've been vegan for 13 years, so i've tried just about everything. i know that everyones tastes are different, and getting used to drinking something new is hard... but don't give up if you don't like it at first. some of these "milks" really are an aquired taste.
ReplyDeletei like: silk organic vanilla soymilk for baking, or by the glass with a cookie :)
silk pure almond is delicious by itself. i like the vanilla, but it is pretty sweet, so maybe try the original if you don't like all that sugar. i'd skip the dark chocolate, it was meh.
if you want a good chocolate milk, try silk chocolate light soymilk. yum!
and for cereal i like rice dream original enriched (which is also organic). it is light and doesn't make your cereal all thick and heavy like the soy or almond milk will. i drink it by the glass too, but the rest of my family thinks that it is gross alone, so my tastes might be strange on that one.
one thing you should think about when considering what to replace your normal dairy intake with, is how much protein you are wanting/getting. soymilk has lots of soy protein, while almond and rice milk have almost none. plus rice milk is high in sugars (natural, but still). just be sure that you are getting the "enriched" milks and you'll be good to go. if you ever have any questions, you can email me <3
Yup. Another Almond Milk lover here.
ReplyDeleteAlmond Breeze is one of the best. And if there's one near you, Trader Joe's new brand is just awesome.
Oh I love trying out vegan food [but not actually being vegan].
ReplyDeleteIs that what you're trying? Hmm...maybe seach for vegan food on Food Gawker [.com]? They always have beautiful food :)
I am lactose intolerant, and have been for about 3 years now (I'm getting legitimately tested for it next week!). I've tried a few different milk alternatives and so far I stick to silk because it reminds me most of real milk. Rice dream is lighter than silk but I found it had a not so pleasant after taste. If you want chocolate milk, chocolate almond breeze is definitely the way to go! My sister bought me a dairy free coobooo called 'go dairy free' and it's awesome! It tells you how to avoid dairy and make most alternatives yourself, plus there are great recipes :) they Also have a website which I think you should be able to find if you search 'go dairy free' on google. I would stay away from soy yogurt and 'so nice' or 'so good' ice cream in winkler/morden area, it's not worth it. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteThis summer I was dairy free while trying to get my heartburn/stomach problems under control. Since being put on medicine for both I can now handle dairy in small doses. I've always been slightly allergic, but my other problems certainly heightened it.
ReplyDeleteI like any kind of organic soy milk that is plain-no flavoring for me!
Good lucky girl! I know you can do it :]
Chocolate almond milk is the best treat in the world!
ReplyDeleteI recommend Almond Breeze or So Nice.
ReplyDeleteAs for recipes, I've always just subbed in unsweetened soy milk without any problems.
Rice Milk (Rice Dream) is my favorite. And it's delicious in coffee, too! :) I recently discovered a local coffee shop that serves lattes made with rice milk, rather than soy, and they were very yummy! (Starbucks only offers the option to substitute soy milk for regular milk.)
ReplyDeleteI'm lactose-intolerant, so a dairy-free diet is a must for me. I use and enjoy Silk in place of milk. The plain variety is best for cereal and things like that, and you can use the flavored varieties for baking. As far as recipes go, it's really about learning to substitute (in my case, I substitute for eggs, chocolate, milk, etc.). It's great that there are so many alternatives available today!
ReplyDeleteYou've got plenty of advice here for substitutes for actual milk, but everyone wants the occasional dessert/treats - we use Nutriwhip a lot here (although I'm not a fan of edible oil products, we have to be dairy-free due to allergies, so with it being completely dairy-free, it atleast gives us an option!). We use 1/4c. Nutriwhip with 3/4c. water and mix with Jello Instant Pudding mix so my son is able to have pudding and he loves it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I haven't tried it yet, but Daiya is supposed to be a great shredded cheese substitute for cooking (it's available at Organza).
Good luck!
Ive been trying to go dairy free for a while now, trying to be a good vegan, but it is tricky.
ReplyDeleteYou don't realise how many food products you buy actually have dairy in them!
I use rice milk, or oat milk, you can even make oat milk yourself, by soaking oats, and then draining them off with some cloth over the top, to stop the bits falling in, perfect if you need milk and have none handy :)
im not sure if you have it there, but sweet william chocolate is like the best dairy free/vegan choco i have found, soo good!
soy milk is good, but too much is not good, it can become toxic, so be careful!
what do you think of almond milk? ive been wanting to try that, just need to locate it at the health shop :)
goodluck im sure you will do awesome!
I use almond milk. generally i grab the unsweetened vanilla one, but they are all pretty good. good luck! i cant have lactose so i usually just make things that dont require milk. some things you can ust switch out the milk with almond or soy. but try to avoid too much soy. ive read things about the ill effects of the hormones from soy
ReplyDeleteMy little guy and I are actually allergic to milk. I do vanilla Rice Milk and he does Very Vanilla with vitamins or chocoalte Silk. We occasionally do milk, but he loves his "banilla milk." And I hear soy is amazing for your health anyway, so I'm okay with it!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
You probably won't see this comment but super store sells goat cheese in a block like mozzarella cheese and it's a great substitute in recipes. Good luck. I'm allergic to dairy (well I'm allergic to whey and that's the protein in dairy) so it's a tough thing for me because I love dairy. Hope you find some great alternatives.
ReplyDeleteHi, I had dto go dairy free cause my baby is allergic. There is a blog... Go Dairy Free. That has fantastic recipes. Especially for desserts which i find the hardest. She also has a book which has some fantastic information on all the different ooptions available and how to substitute in recipes. It has really been great.
ReplyDeleteGood luck
Unsweetened vanilla almond milk is delicious! It tastes almost plain to me. The original kind seems too sweet...sweeter than regular milk. And this is coming from someone who LOVES milk. I could drink multiple glasses a day. Must try!
