I've got gadget fever.I've seen guests at the salon reading (on their Kindles) while their color is processing, and it made me curious about these gadgets.

I've been comparing the Kindle, Nook, and Kobo readers. I am a huge fan of Chapters Indigo and they sell the Kobo. I was leaning towards that one, but they don't have a few of the ebooks that I would want... Amazon's Kindle has more selection as far as ebooks go.
Do YOU have an eReader? What do you love about them? Does it make you read more often?? I don't usually make time to read, but somehow I think that if I had an eReader I would get into it more. What's your opinions on eReaders?

I have a nook and I'm totally loving it: )
ReplyDeleteAfter about a couple weeks of research and hard thinking, that's the one I choose. I like the nook because not only can you buy books from Barnes and Noble, you can download books from Google and even pdfs. The Kindle only reads Amazon's book and some pdfs.
I haven't done research of the other ones because most weren't out then, but I did hear awful things about Sony's reader.
I have been reading a bit more and Barnes and Noble usually has a few classics for free each week, so I've built up my library with classic books I've always wanted to read.
Also with the nook, you can bring it with you to an actual B&N store and read any book for free for up to an hour and it connects to their instore section of the nook and you can get coupons, free books and even free Starbucks sometimes.
I really really really want a kobo! Here in Australia that is the only one I have seen that you can buy from the shops. To get a kindle your have to order it online. Here kobo are sold by Borders and their ebooks are so cheap compared to normal books. We are going to see my sister in the UK in March next year so I am hoping to get one before then to read on the massive plane ride over. It will hopefully keep me from going insane.
ReplyDeleteif it were me... i'd throw down the extra money for the ipad lol
ReplyDeleteI like Suzy have a nook and I adore it!!! I second her comments. I really love the convenience of the nook and the assistance you can get in store at any time even with technical issues which I really like. I would totally go for the nook.
ReplyDeletei have a nook and love it! makes it so much easier to read anywhere b/c i have my library with me. my hubs did tons of tech research and he felt like the nook was the best bang for the buck. we also are huge fans of google android and that is the system it uses. i also agree with the other two ladies that have nooks too. great stuff!!!
ReplyDeleteI have a Kindle (the original) and love.love.love it! I spend too money on my reading habit though, but it's a good habit to have.
ReplyDeleteOk... I never wanted one of these things before, because I like good old fashioned books, but my sister recently got the Nook and she LOVES it, and now you are all making me want one of these babies! Good luck choosing one... I don't have any advice myself but I have heard the most good things about the Nook, and if I got one that's what it would be :)
ReplyDeleteI luv my Nook & the fact u can do library lending, as well as add up to 16g of memory & replaceable battery three things Kindle 3 doesn't have. Also u can only buy books from Kindle. The Nook u can upload many types of documents. Itz a touchscreen which is awesome also! I've made a sleeve for my Nook that fits nicely in my purse.
ReplyDeleteItz a great way too tote around ur library of fantabulous books!
I am going to buy a nook! My father and a few of my friends have one and they are far happier than the few folks I know that have the kindle. The replaceable battery is a great feature as well as the fact that you can buy books from multiple sources (not only amazon as w the kindle). It is the perfect little gadget!! (and the covers are so so cute! I love the Kate Spade ones)
ReplyDeletelooks like the nook is the reader of choice! Thanks for all the advice! xo
ReplyDeleteI know I am late to the same but I worked for Barnes and Noble and we got to play with all the eReaders available when the nook first came out and it was by far the best. Everything written here is really accurate about the nook - and the continual updates rock- so it keeps getting better and better!
ReplyDeleteI have a nook and it's amazing.
ReplyDeleteI've got one of those huge wall-sized bookshelves full of paper books, so I'm a *book lover* and was skeptical about the e-readers, but now that I have a nook, I don't even want to buy paper books anymore. The nook is just so convenient.
I know I read more than I used to also. It's really a wonderful device.
And the kind of cool thing about B&N is the "free Friday" feature on their facebook. Every Friday they give away a book. Mostly genre fiction, but it's free. I've read a ton of books that I wouldn't have otherwise read.
I think you'll be happy with the nook.
I have to admit, I kind of like the new features on the kindle 3... if I had the $$ I'd be tempted to buy one!
Holly, if you have an iPhone, you can try the iBooks app. I use that on my iPhone and love it so far. They've got a lot of books, but I know Amazon's Kindle would have way more. I have their app on there too, but haven't tried it yet. The best part about an eReader on your phone is the portability, IMHO. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you've decided on a Nook already, but I thought I'd put in a good word for the iriver Story, which I have and love. No touchscreen but lots of internal memory, SDHC card support, lots of formats (you could buy/lend from as good as anywhere, and look at comics and pictures too) and continuous updates. Also a full keyboard for notes taking and integrated music player (great sound quality as iriver is well-known for its media players). The speaker is just okay, but with a pair of headphones, it sounds great!
ReplyDeleteAlso, on a side note, you can get loads of free books (legal, because of expired or non-existant copyright) at http://www.gutenberg.org and http://www.feedbooks.com - all the classics are there. Think Shakespeare and Jules Verne etc.
Good luck with your e-reader choice.
So... I know you're looking at a variety of eBook readers here, but I can easily make two recommendations.
ReplyDelete1) The iPad. It's only a few hundred more than any of these and has awesome eBook apps (iBooks, Kindle app, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc., etc.). You can also get awesome digital magazines as well. Just food for thought ;)
2) The kindle. Whichever the latest and greatest is. Given that it's technology and you want it to last a few years it's usually best to invest in the higher end to get an extra year of longevity at least. Several of my geeky friends have the Kindle and absolutely love it. I've looked at the nook and just wasn't impressed with it compared to the Kindle.
Hope this helps from a geeky 2 second overview,
Steven
I personally love the smell of a real book. Plus, they are reliable, all you do is open them, and read. I have wondered, "What if this reader malfuntions, or the battery charge dies, right at the good part or when I need to be reading my book most." That is what I love about real books, they smell good, and they are reliable, and they don't cost a couple hundred dollars. Just an opinion :)
ReplyDeleteI have a kobo....it's the most reasonably priced....and if you download a free 3rd party ebook manager (like caliber)you can download any book format and then convert it to the correct format for your kobo. Mine was onsale at $128 CAD, and came preloaded with 100 books. You can also find lots of free books at Project Gutenberg (open sourse ones that are out of copyright)
