Fab Finds Friday - Red Hair

Red hair is my faaaaavorite. I've been coloring my hair red for the last 10 years, no lie... with the occasional experiment of a different color in between. But I always go back to red. Natural, colored, ginger, berry, bright, subtle, copper, mahogany, auburn... they're all beautiful!

Here's a few tips for keeping your red locks looking lovely (and bright!). Use a good quality color saving shampoo! Number one important rule. You don't want to spend $100 (or whatever) on your hair color and then use a $2 shampoo on it, because it'll fade out in a few washes. Use a salon or professional quality shampoo that says "color save" or "for colored hair" on the bottle.
Heat can be hard on your red hair, so use it with caution. In the shower, don't use super hot water for the first week after coloring. It doesn't have to be cold, but make sure it's not super duper hot. Before you blowdry, apply an oil to your hair, such as any argan oil like "Moroccan Oil" or "Merrakesh Oil". This will protect the hair from the heat, and keep the cuticle closed, making the color stay put. Put a small amount through the hair before flat ironing as well.

Another good tip, go easy on the hairspray! The alcohol in cheaper sprays fades red quickly. Be sure to use a professional quality spray, and don't over do it.

By following those few steps, you should be able to go 5 weeks between coloring, easy.
I'm getting my color done at the salon this afternoon, and I can't wait! It's such a treat to get my hair done, rather than be the one always doing everyone else's hair. :):)

All you red heads out there.... what shampoo do YOU use? how long do you go between re-touches? What's YOUR favorite shade? I usually color my hair a deep raspberry red, love those berry hues! My bangs are a darker violet.
Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
Mine will consist of:
-working
-setting up the new Aveda retail
-Aveda color course
-hopefully playing some "Ticket to Ride - Europe", new favorite board game!
-crocheting

Happy Friday!

  3. My hair is naturally a dark red-brown, and I spend a lot of time trying to cover up the red! It's really, really hard- no matter what I put over the red, it starts to reappear in a few washes. So frustrating. On the other hand, my natural shade IS pretty. I just get bored :P

  4. I agree with Rebecca: this post came at the perfect time. I've been thinking about going red for two or three months, but I'm struggling to find the right shade with my complexion. Picking the shade is soooo hard (but exciting!)

  8. i use box dye...i've been a red head on and off for the past 7 or so years too!! it's my favourite colour for sure but lately i dyed my hair brown as i had been getting into pinks more and i have a hard time matching red hair with pinks (and some other colours sometimes) brown is a little easier and more neautral...but definitely not as fun! my favourite was when i did manic panic to it. i didn't bleach it first but it still turned out super duper bright and i la la la looooved it!!! i usually don't use any special shampoo, herbal essences or something but always one with colour save, for sure!!

your hair always looks pretty! is it a myth then about not dying your hair when your preggo?

  9. carly.: yeah it's a total myth. The chemicals in color never absorb through the scalp, and the only danger would be doing bleach or a color with a strong developer in a poorly ventilated area. There are a lot of color lines available at your salon with no ammonia, or organic ingredients as well, which is a plus for concerned pregnant women.
I've kept my hair colored throughout both of my pregnancies.

  10. I've been coloring my hair red since I was 13, so that's about 16 years ago now, I've done other colors in between as well, but much like you I always end up going back to red. Lately I've been Using home color, I use Feria and I change colors occasionally, I use either Ruby Fusion, Ruby Rush Brillant Bordeaux or Sunset Blaze, I like to try all diff reds !
I did notice years ago that roots grow in very quicky, my hair is nautrally dark brown. So I usually wash it with shampoo only twice a week and just condition it every other day. I use Pantene Color Shield (I think it's called) and I use Herbal Essences Conditioner for tousle me softly. I don;t use hot water rinsing my hair out in the shower either.
I love red hair, for me it's the best fit !

  12. I work at an Aveda salon in Virginia Beach. The color is completely different but so cool! I am in love with the Smooth Infusion line and the Color Conserve pH Finish Conditioner. I've been wanting to get some red peekaboo highlights. My hair is naturally a level 2 and I think the contrast will look really good. Any suggestions about placement???

  13. I LOVE your red! I'm a natural red-head, but I use ISO and Argan oil on my hair both now and when I colored a little. I used to use the Shwarzkopf shampoo when I was trying to hide the post-baby greys that popped up.
My stylist said the curly ISO and Argan oil will help out the dry scalp while keeping my locks light and fluffy. And it does!

  15. I am a red head and Aveda Color Conserve is my BEST FRIEND!!!
Another thing I have learned to love and embrace while being a redhead is only washing my hair twice a week and putting dry shampoo to good use.
